Use Social Media

It's more complicated than banging your ref link into Facebook, or spamming Twitter. You need to use a little subtlety to get a good amount of refs from Social Media.

Before we begin

So many people have been jumping on the Social Media band wagon it’s no surprise that the freebie scene has been taking advantage of it for years. It is worth remembering a very crucial point when it comes to using Social Media to get referrals.

At present you’re connected with people via Social Media who you are friends with, and you DON’T want to risk that friendship.

So therefore what you need to learn is how to get as many friends signed up as possible without annoying anyone, as well as how to use social media to interact with strangers.

Sit back and relax kids! It’s learning time.

Social Media used in getting freebie referrals

You seriously need to make a website!

Sorry if this is a little boring to keep on hearing over and over and over, but it’s true! Let me tell you a story. Once, in the most successful part of my freebie career, I used Social Media to generate no less than 92 referrals (or between £1,500 and £2,200 – depending on how I cashed it out) in no more than 6 hours. The only way this was possible was because I had a website, iMoose, which I could fully utilize. Learn how to make a website with our Create a Website guide right here on iMoose. Go Now »

Facebook: the social platform and your presence on the web

Facebook is without a doubt the number 1 social medi site on the internet. When asked about Facebook Tom Anderson, the founder of MySpace said (on his Facebook subscription ‘Fan’ page no less!)

I love it (Facebook). Facebook has accomplished what I wanted to accomplish when I started MySpace – that “everyone” would be online, and “everything” online would get more fun & useful because its social. To me, Facebook just keeps getting better & better.

If that’s not an endorsement of Facebook’s success then I don’t know what is? This must clearly show you guys that Facebook is a social network which MUST be harnessed in order to get all of those free referrals for Freebie Jeebies. So what options to we have?

The most obvious thing to do on Facebook is post your Freebie Jeebies referral link as a Status update. Although this will draw in a few referrals it’s best to make a website first, and post that instead. This allows you the opportunity to write a detailed description of the process, as well as post some proof videos and pictures on your site which will increase the amount of referrals you get. Make sure you don’t pester your friends too much! You might loose them!

Facebook pages are a great way to increase your presence on Facebook. The idea is that once you’ve got your website up and running, you make a Fan page and get as many people as possible to like it. Their friends see they’ve liked a new page, and ultimately end up on your website. Boom! You now have to convert those visitors to referrals! Facebook’s photo application is a great way to convince your friends (as well as any strangers which happen to be on your Facebook for whatever reason) to sign up to Freebie Jeebies. The basic idea is that once you’ve received your first freebie, such as a free Apple iPod Shuffle, you post a proof photo with a link to your website in the description. Check out some of my poof pictures at the bottom of my poof page.

Unsurprisingly this is basically the same as the Facebook picture tip posted above. There is however a few important differences with the video method. 1) You need to show the unboxing 2) You need to make sure the audience know its you (i.e. speak during it) 3) You need to prove that you’re not shipping it to yourself. Maybe show the receipt which proves you didn’t buy it yourself? Once again you can check out the iMoose poof page for a few examples.

Once you’ve got your Facebook Fan page set up you can start tagging it in your Status updates using the ‘at’ symbol: @ as well as tagging friends you think will be interested, or those who have helped you out. If you tag 5 friends in a Status along with your website, then all their friends see your website on their wall, and before you know it you’ve got a fair few people visiting your site.

Making a Fan page isn’t that hard, and it allows you to put great widgets on your site. This also helps with conversion when strangers come to your website (from other methods such as the Business Card method). People see the Facebook logo, as well as having the ability to contact you via your page, and ultimately are more likely to sign up. Something worth thinking about.

Twitter: don’t be a twit and spam, tweet and prosper!
